FREE LIBRARY CARDS: If you live in Jefferson County (with the exception of Grand Prairie township), you can get a free library card with the C.E. Brehm Memorial Public Library.
LEGAL INFORMATION AT THE LIBRARY: If you are a senior or a disabled or low-income individual, there is free legal information available to you at the library through Illinois Legal Aid Online. This online resource not only gives you information about civil law (lawsuits, adoption, small claims, identity theft, workers compensation, wills, child custody, divorce, changing your name, tenant rights, etc.) but it also provides forms that you can fill in (many of which will walk you through how to find the right form to use). This resource can even put you in contact with people and organizations that can provide you with free or reduced fee legal aid. Monday through Friday, from Noon to 5 p.m., there will be staff available at the library that can help you access this online resource. Staff help is available at other times, but you will need to set an appointment. Library staff can only give you information and cannot provide legal advice, though they can connect you with people who can. While the site and assistance is free, you will have to pay for any print-outs.
DIGITAL BOOKS FOR THE BLIND & PHYSICALLY HANDICAPPED: Library staff will be available to show you how to download audio books through the BARD system run by the National Library for the Blind & Physically Handicapped (NLBPH). Monday through Friday, from Noon to 5 p.m., there will be staff available at the library who can help you use this online resource. Staff help is available at other times but you will need to set up an appointment. These books only play on the special player provided by NLBPH.
FREE DOWNLOADABLE DIGITAL BOOKS: Nineteen libraries in the Shawnee Library System, including C.E. Brehm, have been working together to establish Southern Illinois Libraries On the Go, a digital library which will be offering audiobooks and eBooks that are available 24/7, through the library's website. More libraries will begin participating in the next few months. This new service, powered by OverDrive, will be free with your library card. Titles will automatically expire at the end of the lending period. There are no late fees!
TOURS OF THE LIBRARY: If your group, organization, or class would like a tour of the library, please call Bill at 242-6322.
FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY: The Friends of the C.E. Brehm Memorial Pub lic Library meets the third Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Join in discussing how the Friends can help the library. Refreshments will be served.
